Biological Influence on Ocean Carbon: Novel Modelling Approaches

Biological Influence on Ocean Carbon: Novel Modelling Approaches
Programme:UKRI
Awards:80% of up to £1.2m
Geographical Scope:national
Beneficiaries:public
Key Features:UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), through the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), has launched a major funding opportunity to support the development of novel modelling approaches for understanding the biological influences on oceanic carbon systems.

Key Features at a Glance

  • Funding Amount: Up to £1.2 million (80% full economic cost), £1.5 million total budget

  • Eligible Applicants: UK-based researchers at eligible UKRI institutions

  • Call Focus: Development of innovative modelling tools to quantify biological processes influencing ocean carbon

  • Project Duration: Up to 36 months

  • Deadline for Outline Proposals: 23 July 2025 (4:00pm UK time)

Scope of the Call

This funding call is centred on a critical climate science challenge: understanding how biological activity in the ocean modulates carbon storage and fluxes. While physical and chemical processes in ocean carbon models are relatively mature, biological complexity—such as plankton dynamics, nutrient cycling, and food web interactions—remains poorly represented.

UKRI is calling for proposals that:

  • Develop or integrate novel biological modelling components

  • Improve representation of feedback mechanisms between biology and carbon cycling

  • Advance uncertainty quantification in marine biogeochemical models

  • Incorporate biological variability over seasonal to decadal timescales

  • Connect models with observations, including autonomous ocean sensors and satellite data

Proposals must demonstrate:

  • Scientific originality

  • Robust modelling methodologies

  • Potential to improve UK and international climate predictions

Timeline

  • Outline Proposal Deadline: 23 July 2025 (4:00pm)

  • Full Proposal Deadline: October 2025 (TBC)

  • Funding Decision: January 2026 (estimated)

  • Project Start Date: No later than 1 March 2026

Applicants must complete both stages of the application process. Those successful at the outline stage will be invited to submit full proposals via the UKRI Funding Service.

Benefits to Applicants

Selected projects will receive:

  • Significant long-term funding from the UK’s leading environmental research council

  • High-impact research visibility within the climate modelling community

  • Access to collaborative platforms through NERC

  • Support to influence national and international science-policy dialogue

  • Opportunity to contribute to net-zero aligned science missions

This call supports not only technical innovation but also a shift in the research culture toward interdisciplinary, systems-level thinking—a vital asset for any academic team or consortium working on climate resilience.

Funding Overview

This opportunity will fund projects with costs up to £1.2 million at 80% full economic cost, meaning NERC will provide up to £960,000 per successful proposal. UKRI aims to fund two proposals, supporting innovative science that bridges marine biogeochemistry, ecological dynamics, and climate modelling.

Funding is provided under UKRI’s standard research grant terms, which includes support for salaries, investigator time, fieldwork, data analysis, and software development where appropriate.

Key Funding Notes:

  • Total NERC contribution per project: ~£960,000

  • Maximum project duration: 36 months

  • Start date: Projects must begin by 1 March 2026

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, applicants must be:

  • Based at a UKRI-recognised research organisation

  • Employed at an institution eligible to receive UKRI grants (e.g. universities, approved research centres)

  • Willing to participate in collaborative events hosted by NERC

  • Able to meet both outline and full proposal deadlines

International collaboration is permitted as subcontractors or partners, but the lead institution must be UK-based.

Outline stage applicants must also:

  • Submit an Expression of Interest by 23 July 2025

  • Participate in a community workshop scheduled for late summer 2025

Why This Matters

As one of the largest carbon sinks on the planet, the ocean plays a vital role in regulating Earth’s climate. However, uncertainties around how biological processes like phytoplankton productivity, food web structure, and microbial activity affect carbon sequestration continue to limit our predictive confidence.

This funding opportunity is a direct response to recommendations from the UK Marine Science Coordination Committee and reflects priorities set out in the UKRI Environmental Strategy and Net Zero Research Portfolio.

By supporting advanced modelling of biological mechanisms, this programme aims to:

  • Improve climate policy tools

  • Guide ocean-based carbon removal strategies

  • Inform international climate models (e.g. CMIP, IPCC)

“Understanding biological contributions to the ocean carbon cycle is essential to improving the robustness of future climate projections.”

What stood out was their proactive in-year review process. This approach has meant that we are now months ahead on our next claim, as the technical information has already been obtained during the year. This ensures our future claims are based on up-to-date and more reliable technical data, giving us even greater assurance.

We are extremely pleased with the R&D tax work carried out by FI Group on behalf of Stablepharma during 2024. Giuseppe and his team were great collaborators and quickly assimilated the necessary data to best showcase our R&D efforts, with excellent attention to detail. This resulted in a much-improved claim for our organisation, which will have an immediate impact on the work we can carry out in 2025. We would highly recommend them to other industry colleagues.
